my view of the characters is so divorced from show canon that i’m not having extremely strong feelings about dd being cancelled? let’s all start reading the comics tho

EVERYONE COME READ THE COMICS AND THEN WRITE 616 MATT/FOGGY PLEASE

any recs of ones i could read on marvel unlimited? i got an account and then promptly forgot about it until now.

AT LAST, MY CALLING IS UPON ME. I’ma run through the major eras/arcs by how they appear on Marvel Unlimited and how good the Foggy Content is/how much of a beautiful disaster Matt is, but the short version is I would probably recommend starting with Bendis and chugging right on through to the end of Volume 2, which will bring you up to the Waid Years, which I know you’ve already read.

Daredevil Volume 1 (1964-1998)

  • Silver Age: #1-approximately #80. Very silly but very inventive! Silver Age stuff is an acquired taste, though, so if you don’t feel like wading through all of that, I recommend Foggy’s initial romance with Debbie (10-11), the time he pretended to be Daredevil (18), and the original Mike Murdock saga (25-41).
  • Bronze Age: #81ish-#125ish. Also known as the Black Widow years. Not quite as silly as the Silver Age, but still pretty silly while also becoming increasingly melodramatic and snarky about women’s lib? (I’m not a huge Bronze Age fan in general.) This is kind of patchy on MU and Foggy content is limited for most of it since he’s still in NY and Matt and Natasha are in San Francisco. Foggy returns in #108 as DA and Candace debuts around there, if you’re interested in Matt standing vigil over Foggy’s hospital bed while flirting with his sister. 😉
  • Miller Era Part 1: #158-#191. Miller is VERY sexist (and also very racist and homophobic, although that comes up less because his work during this period was very straight and white). That said, he was also growing into his mastery of the form during this period and his work is incredibly striking and iconic. He really built the Matt character that you’ll recognize from the show in these issues. I recommend this run very highly but totally understand why people pass. Includes the debut of Bullseye and the reintroduction of Kingpin, plus of course the debut of Elektra (#168). #173 is the one where Matt is almost sexually assaulted by bikers (I’m not kidding); could be triggering to some people. Elektra dies in #181; Matt meets Frank for the first time in #183. #185 is the “Guts” Nelson issue and it’s amazing. Another TW: Matt is emotionally and (in one instance) physically abusive to his girlfriend Heather after Elektra’s death.
  • O’Neil Era: #192-#226. This is largely missing from MU which is fine because it sucks. Mazzucchelli’s art is GORGEOUS and Foggy is Doing His Best but this is racist and sexist and you don’t need it in your life.
  • Miller Era Part 2: #227-#233. Otherwise known as Born Again. Miller and Mazzucchelli at the top of their game. The Nuke plotline goes off the rails a bit and Karen is at her nadir but it’s a masterpiece. FOGGY IS SO HANDSOME AND GOOD IN IT!!!
  • Nocenti Era: #234-#290ish. EXTREMELY weird and sexist; also patchy representation on MU. Very little Foggy content and what is there is Bad. If you would like to see a very subby Matt read anything with Typhoid Mary on the cover but be aware that it is pretty dubconny.
  • The rest of Volume 1: Eh. This is also super patchy on MU, which mostly is no great loss but I do love the Kelly and Kesel runs (that’s when Matt and Foggy are working for Rosalind and the whole thing is basically a workplace sitcom). Honestly though, you can go ahead and skip from Born Again to…

Daredevil Volume 2 (1998-2010)

  • Guardian Devil: #1-8. This is the Kevin Smith story where Karen dies. Only read it if you’re morbidly curious, it’s garbage.
  • Bendis Era: #26-#81. There’s obviously some stuff between Smith and here (including some Bendis, actually) but you can skip it unless you want to just read the whole volume straight through (not a terrible idea). This is the long unfurling of Matt’s secret identity and it’s designed as a slow burn and incremental car crash. I definitely have some problems with how he portrays women, as I’ve mentioned in DD101, but overall I do heartily recommend just plowing through the whole thing. It’s really meant to be binged, which must have been weird 15 years ago when these were coming out once a month. ANYWAY FOGGY IS GREAT, THIS IS WHERE HE BLOSSOMS INTO A GROWN UP BOY.
  • Brubaker Era: #82-#119. The first arc of this, Devil in Cell Block D, is incredible and a must-read. The second, where Matt thinks Foggy’s dead and is going on a revenge quest through Europe, is medium, but their reunion is very good. The rest kind of sucks. (Matt’s wife isn’t killed, but she’s still basically fridged.)
  • Shadowland: #501 on. Look, Shadowland is idiotic (Matt takes over the Hand, is possessed by a demon, and establishes martial law in Hell’s Kitchen) but it’s the kind of idiotic I LOVE and if you read it on MU they will handily put all of the crossover issues in order for you (a Luke book, a Danny book, a Misty book, a Colleen book, a Peter book…). The Foggy content is A+++++.

Daredevil Volume 3 (2011-2014) and Volume 4 (2014-2015): YES YES YES READ EVERY SINGLE ISSUE

Daredevil Volume 5 (2015-present): This has been hit or miss for me but you might as well read it, I guess? It’s all there and it’s the current volume? I didn’t really start enjoying it until the Mayor Fisk storyline but I like Matt’s temporary teen sidekick.

Daredevil Volume 6: This hasn’t started yet but it’s going to be by Chip Zdarsky so it’s going to be amazing probably.

Miniseries

(I’m just listing the ones I recommend, there are definitely more than this.)

  • Daredevil: Noir: BEAUTIFUL art, A+ Foggy content, kind of a mopey sexist Matt. But it’s set in the 20s and he wears a tank top, which is Good.
  • Daredevil: Cage Match: This is only one issue but it’s Matt and Luke deciding to fight for fun and Foggy and Danny are like “WHY” and Turk causes shenanigans and I love it.
  • Daredevil: Dark Nights: Fun adventures during the Waid years (but written but other folks)! Matt flirts with Misty and Foggy goes to the beach!
  • Daredevil: Road Warrior: You may have already read this if you’ve read the Waid run but it takes place just before Volume 3 and it’s great.
  • Daredevil: Man Without Fear: Not my favorite but it’s the second most famous Daredevil story, if that’s important to you. Miller and Romita Jr. The origin of the black pajamas.
  • Daredevil: Yellow: Gorgeous repainting of Matt’s earliest adventures. Contains Foggy proposing to Matt, basically.

OKAY I’M DONE ENJOY!!!

YOU’RE SUCH AN ANGEL, THANK YOU!
